    Rural Poverty in Latin America

The fact that most poor people in Latin America live in urban areas had implied that poverty in the region is regarded as largely an urban phenomenon. However, this document exposes what available data suggest: that rural poverty still is significant in many Latin American countries.Social Development :: Poverty, Rural & Urban Development :: Rural Development, Rural Poverty in Latin America

    IN-VEHICLE SAFETY USING AUDIO DETECTION

    Get PDF
It can be dangerous to leave children or pets in vehicles, especially in extreme heat conditions. Typically, those responsible for the children or pets do not intend to cause harm and, instead, may have lost track of time while the conditions in the vehicle become dangerous. Techniques presented herein provide mechanisms that can be used to detect audio distress in humans and/or animals in a vehicle and notify a driver of the vehicle/owner of the animal of the distressed human or animal

ACCENT ADJUSTMENT BASED ON SPOKEN FEEDBACK

    Get PDF
In some instances, such as for online video conferences, call center interactions, etc., it can be difficult to understand what someone is saying based on their accent. Presented herein is a solution through which natural language processing (NLP) can be utilized to facilitate an accent detector that can determine a problematic accent intent and adjust a speaker\u27s accent by adjusting and normalizing the speaker\u27s speech to a more relatable accent of a person with whom the speaker is communicating

DETERMINING WAIT TIME FOR RETURN OF MISSED CALL

    Get PDF
Techniques are presented herein that help a calling party understand how long they should expect to wait, following a missed telephone call to a called party, to receive a return call from the called party. In support of that functionality, the presented techniques may learn about a called party’s behaviors (through, for example, entries in their electronic calendar, entries in a to-do list, etc. and their calling patterns) and create (e.g., reminder) entries in a called party’s calendar. A first aspect of the presented techniques encompasses determining an amount of time that should be allowed for a call between a calling and a called party; a second aspect encompasses determining when a called party is next available to make a call; and a third aspect encompasses determining the times when a called party typically returns calls

PERSONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FATIGUE INSIGHTS FOR AN ONLINE COLLABORATION SERVICE

    Get PDF
Fatigue and burnout have become problems that are associated with remote and hybrid work. Those problems are driven by a number of factors including, for example, isolation, long working hours, cross-time zone work replacing in-person travel, sustained effort without a break, and a lack of a suitable home working environment. To address the challenge that was described above, various solutions are provided herein through several techniques. A first technique involves a personal relative video fatigue degradation monitor which measures the onset of fatigue over a given time period. A second technique involves a system that provides insights to reduce fatigue based on environmental sensor input for an online collaboration service

    Putting the Comprehension in Metacomprehension

    Get PDF
The purpose of the present piece is to integrate some current theories of text comprehension with the body of work on metacomprehension, and especially the calibration of comprehension monitoring. This paper explores some important methodological and conceptual issues, inspired by current theories in the text comprehension literature, which suggest that the nature of the texts used for metacomprehension studies may be a critical, and currently unrecognized, factor that should be considered. First, we need to re-examine what we mean by “comprehension,” and how we should measure it. There are important differences between memory for text and comprehension of text that need to be considered. Second, to fully deal with these concerns, we need to pay more attention to the kinds of expository text that are being used, the different ways that readers may understand these texts, and how readers may interpret the concept of “understanding” as they make their judgments
